My Face Lift In A Compact

Suzanne Somer’s Face Master

I like to call this my personal “face lift in a compact”. The Suzanne Somer’s “Face Master”. It uses electromagnetic wave energy (micro current) to stimulate and tone the skin and facial muscles. It works great to kill the bacteria that causes acne!

The year I attended beauty college was one of the most financially strapped years of my life. I could not afford expensive beauty products. But, I DID own a Face Master. I used it 3-4 times a week back then. I was dealing with unusually oily skin. I know now it was caused from lots of stress and the Texas heat stimulating my oil glands in to overdrive!

At the age of 38, I was desperate for something that could help me with anti-aging and skin tone. I started to use my Face Master out of necessity. I noticed firmer, toner skin. I also noticed smaller pore size and way less break outs! My skin glowed!

Here’s another plus…It plumps your lips! Whenever I have used the feathering technique around my lips there is visible plumping! One of my instructors at school used to have me bring it to school and plump up her lips before a night out!

O.K. it gets even better. One of the Rep’s for a popular skin line came to our school to demonstrate microderm to our class. She took one look at me and said to the instructor “I want whatever SHE is using!”. I told her” it’s just my Face Master!”

No, I do not work for Suzanne Somers or Face Master. I am simply passing on some really valuable information to those who are interested in this amazing product!

Thank you so much for reading my blog. Now go get your Face Master! I LOVE mine!

XOXOX Caroline;)

Cucumber-Ginger-Seaweed Masque Recipe

Masque In Ramekin

Here is a fun masque recipe loaded with nutrients to invigorate and nourish dull lifeless skin…

I just made this masque this morning for a friend. The aromas of fresh cucumber and ginger will make you swoon! Her skin had a soft dewy glow afterwards. And I cannot wait to try out  the leftovers tonight on myself ❤  Meanwhile, mine is chillin in the fridge!

Add the ingredients below to your blender and blend on high until smooth~

1. Tablespoon Fresh Lemon Juice

2. 2 Tablespoons Plain Yogurt

3. 1-2 Ounces Irish Seaweed (Soaked for 8 hours, then rinse and add to Masque)

4. 1 1/2 Tablespoons Coconut Milk

5. 1/4 of a Medium Cucumber (peeled)

6. 1/4 Cup Fresh Young Thai Coconut Meat

1. Small piece (1/2 inch) of Fresh Peeled Ginger Root

Blend Ingredients in your blender for 2-3 minutes.  Masque will be consistency of pudding. Add more seaweed if necessary to thicken. The Seaweed will thicken masque nicely. Chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes or longer prior to use.

MASQUE IN BLENDER

You can lather this masque on all over your body. Rub it into the skin in circular motions. Allow it to set for at least 10 minutes before removing with a warm wash cloth, or in the shower.

About The Ingredients~

LEMON~ Has Vitamin C  For antioxidant benefits. Citric Acid acts as a mild skin peel and skin lightener. A wonderful natural exfoliant.

YOGURT~ Moisturizes the skin, fights acne bacteria, prevents premature aging, soothes sunburned and/or inflamed skin. Helps prevent discoloration of the skin.

IRISH MOSS SEAWEED~  Can be purchased at your local health food store, or on Amazon.com. Helps move toxins out of the skin. Reduces redness and irritation. Nourishes the skin with essential nutrients and minerals missing in most modern diets.

CUCUMBER~ Has a natural cooling effect on the skin. Anti-inflammatory, hydrating, soothing. It can help protect your skin from sun damage. That’s because it’s packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and caffeic acid. As an added bonus, the vitamin C also increases collagen and elastin production, resulting in younger-looking skin.

YOUNG THAI COCONUT MEAT~ Has minerals, it’s hydrating and moisturizing to the skin. Anti-viral and anti-bacterial.

GINGER~  Ginger is important to skin health because the elasticity and firmness of skin is what starts to deteriorate with aging. So ginger will help to preserve the skin’s youthful strength and elasticity and slow down the signs of aging. It is ant-bacterial, anti-viral, and it reduces inflammation. A great acne fighter when rubbed directly on to skin.

COCONUT MILK~ The high fat content in coconut milk makes it the perfect skin cleanser. Fats bind to other fats and especially dirt on the skin. Coconut milk binds the impurities and lifts them off of your skin. Skin feels clean and fresh without drying out. Coconut is full of anti-oxidants and also has an anti-bacterial nature to it.  Hydrates skin without over moisturizing.

Thank you for stopping by my blog!

How To Look Younger Without Spending A Fortune

Ways-To-Save-Money[1]

I want to tell you how you can make some simple, inexpensive, and easy changes to your lifestyle that will make a BIG difference in your appearance with very little damage to your pocket-book. I am a HUGE believer in lifestyle over genetics as a much more compelling influence in the quest to looking younger.

Here is a list of things that I incorporate in to my life, along with some emergency damage control tips when you screw up (like me!) and you need a quick pick me up:

1. On a daily basis, drink LOTS of water (8-10 glasses or more!).

This is often overlooked as important because people do not realise that water circulates in the body and shows up on your face in the form of plumper, smoother skin!

2. Avoid caffeine and alcohol!!!!

It dehydrates and shrivels up your skin!! You can lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in a BIG way by just practicing these first 2 tips! Just take a before and after picture and see for yourself! (wait 3 days)

3. Exercise regularly (brisk walking, Zumba, anything that makes you SWEAT!).

If you can’t or won’t exercise, I have an alternative for you. It’s called SAUNA… Make yourself sweat. This will help release toxins out of your skin and promote circulation to the face.

4. Light Therapy!

Nope, I don’t expect you to go spend $75.00 and up at a Spa for this. I saw a Groupon offering infrared light therapy for 1/2 off at $75.00. You can do this repeatedly at home for a one time fee of around $35.00.

There are numerous benefits to be had with my much more affordable alternative.

Check out my blog post on Sauna Therapy.

You can purchase an infrared bulb and clamp base at your local hardware store. Sit under it at a safe distance (Don’t burn yourself!) for about 20 minutes a day or a few times a week! Read my blog post for more details on the benefits.

5. Buy a “Hydrating” gel masque

For quick emergency plumping when you haven’t followed the first two tips faithfully. A more natural alternative would be one of my oatmeal masque recipes I have posted on this blog. Check them out!

6. Practice “Icing” your skin.

Joan Crawford and Michael Landon did this every day. First thing in the morning after cleansing your skin, hold ice to your cheeks, forehead, and all over for as long as you can stand it. What does this do?

Cold molecules actually spin in the direction of your cells and drive water into your skin. Hot water molecules spin in the opposite direction and pull water and moisture out!

The ice also shrinks capillaries resulting in less redness and inflammation on the face as well as smaller pores!

(THANKS to Olga Burova my very brilliant Russian friend for teaching me about hot and cold molecules!).

7. Use a Collagen Masque.

You can purchase one at any drug store or beauty supply very inexpensively from anywhere from $1.99 and up. Make sure to exfoliate before laying fabric on the skin.

8. Exfoliate gently 1-2 times a week.

You don’t have to purchase an expensive exfoliant.

Simply mix together some sugar and honey and rub in circular motions all over the face after cleansing (while skin is damp). You can also use a little baking soda mixed in with your facial cleanser for a beautiful glow.

This removes dead skin from the face, helps other products to penetrate deeper into the skin and encorages new skin cell growth. This is perhaps the most underestimated skin care habit out there for a more youthful appearance.

9. Get To Bed Before 10:00pm!

Studies show the hours between 10:00pm and 2:00am are crucial to the bodies own natural repairing and healing process. People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to overeat and have more health problems.

Now for some tips that take a little more effort but not a lot:

1. DR. PERRICONE 3-DAY FACE LIFT~ Check out his website for details.

http://blog.perriconemd.com/perricone-3-day-diet-get-a-face-lift-in-your-kitchen/

2. GREEN TEA BAGS~

Carry them with you on vacations or keep a good stash in your kitchen. Steep a couple of them for a few minutes and then throw them in the fridge or freezer. After about 10 minutes, lay back and apply them to your eyes. Leave them 10-15 minutes.

Afterwards your eyes should look much brighter and happier. I am so glad I thought to stash them in my bag on a recent trip to Dallas. I threw out all of my normal practices and ate loads of pizza and junk food. After a night of wine tasting I woke up to a very inflamed face and swollen eye lids.

I am not a party animal at all, it was just some innocent wine tasting! Something I could have done in my 20′s with very little consequences in my appearance. I broke out my green tea bags to the rescue!

3. FACE MASSAGE~

I think Tonya Zavasta has one of the best self protocols out there! Do this several times a week to relax and strengthen facial muscles.

These are just a few tips. There are so many other natural things that you can do. But this is a great start and promises some astounding results. Pick one or two and try them out. Take some before and after photos of yourself!

Thank you for visiting my blog and please rate me, follow me on FB and/or Twitter @SecretsOfTheSpa. Or just leave me a comment to let me know what you think!

Hope to share some more Spa Secrets very soon!

My Favorite Products

I thought it would be fun to post a few of the products that I love to use. I know before I became an Esthetician, I was always curious about the products my Esthetician used. I never could seem to get a straight answer from her. Now I know why! It’s because we are always trying out different products and we are always discovering new and exciting ingredients, protocols and technology. How can we just settle on any one product line? We can’t! So I decided that I will be posting a regular update on my favorite new or old product discoveries on a regular basis. Just a little help to satisfy anyones curiosity!

deadsea_skin_polish[1]

Dead Sea Minerals Body Polish~

The first one pictured above, is an invigorating all in one Face and Body Polish from the Dead Sea Warehouse. It is loaded with minerals and gives the face and body an amazing stimulating exfoliating treatment. Skin feels soft, smooth and hydrated afterwards. As far as a facial exfoliant is concerned, I noticed visibly smaller pores after my first use.

If you are prone to eczema or itchy dry skin, then your body will love this product! The best way to use it is on dry skin. So I suggest rinsing off in the shower with some soap and water first. Go ahead and use your regular cleanser on your face while in the shower. Afterwards, step out of the shower onto a big towel, towel dry face and body thoroughly, make sure to pin your hair up! Then squirt a generous amount onto your hands, rub the product onto the skin from the feet up toward the heart in a circular motion. You may want to use exfoliating gloves during the body treatment.

If product dries too quickly, go ahead and add a little water. Once you are finished exfoliating your body all over, remove your exfoliating gloves. Look into a mirror (I prefer a magnified one), add a small amount of polish into your hands and begin exfoliating your face in circular motions. Make sure to get that T-Zone area where dead skin likes to hang around! Afterwards, get back in the shower and rinse off the product.

~Unrefined Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Unrefined Organic Virgin Coconut oil is easy to find in the cooking oil section of may health food stores. It has a plethora  of uses that move beyond cooking and right into your bathroom, which is where I always keep a jar underneath the sink. An excellent replacement for body lotions as well as a moisturizer for dry brittle hair ends. During the Winter months I will often times use coconut on my skin before bed and after cleansing. Skin can be a bit oily during the Summer months, coconut oil is a great Winter time moisturizer in the evening before bed. It helps alleviate dry tight skin, acts as a barrier (if you accidentally over exfoliate or get razor burn), is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal,  anti-viral, aids in the healing process, and slows down elastin loss. There’s much more, but I will stop there!

~Exfoliating Gloves

Exfoliating gloves are a must if you want to get a really good deep down body scrub. I start from the bottom and work my way up toward the heart. This helps with lymphatic drainage as well. I love to use these gloves whenever I am using any type of body scrub. Be careful not to overdo it or you will have patches of sore skin! Two to three times a week is good. And NEVER use these gloves on your face, they are much too harsh. It is very hard to know how intense you are exfoliating with these gloves on, so avoid the delicate skin of the face….I do, however gently go over my neck area, but very gently! Make sure to use a good moisturizer after exfoliating. Coconut oil is a great one! But any one will do.

~Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath

I LOVE Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath. Mustard seed and essential oils open up the pores and help the body to eliminate toxins. Circulation is stimulated. Yes, this will make the skin red in places, but the benefits far outweigh that little inconvenience. Have embarrassing “Bacne”? Then you will love this bath potion!

~Tea Tree Oil

tea_tree_oil_web_1[1]

Tea Tree oil, the Australian Oil is best. It is supposed to be the purest form. You can actually mix a drop of this with your moisturizer in the evening to help clear up acne. Got “bacne”?, then use after your mustard bath! Be sure not to use too much as it can also be drying and cause flaking. Moderation is the key. A few nights a week or every other day. You can also add a few drops to your favorite shampoo to help fight dandruff. There are so many uses for this. It’s anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, makes a great mouthwash, can be used to treat bronchitis and other ailments.

Naturally Yours auromere toothpaste licorice[1]

~Auromere Licorice Toothpaste

Want your teeth to be as white as a professional whitening treatment? Despite many of the specials on tooth whitening that spas are always advertising, I’ve never had a whitening treatment because I am paranoid of the gum damage it can cause. Ever see a person with receding gums?  No thanks! A natural healthy way to whiten your teeth is “Auromere” toothpaste. I use the “Licorice” flavored one because “Licorice” is known for it’s natural whitening abilities…Everything in this toothpaste is natural.

I will be posting more of my favorite products in the future.

Cellulite…What Is it?

There are so many things that you can do, not only to prevent cellulite, but also to reduce the appearance of it. But, first, I want to give a brief explanation of the different causes of it. Because, in order to fight it, we must know who our enemy is. One of the first and foremost factors in cellulite may surprise you.  To begin with, I will list them out with a brief description.

~Genetics

The explanation of this one is probably going to be very different then what you may be thinking. Each of us is born with elastin bands/fibers that surround our tissues. Just like our fingerprints, these bands all have a unique pattern in our biological make up. African-American women tend to have elastin bands/fibers that are closer together than those of Caucasians. If your bands are farther apart in places, and you put on a little weight, than your fat will actually bulge between the bands. The appearance of cellulite is then of course intensified in those areas.

~Lifestyle

This explanation has the potential to send me on a lot of rabbit trails. I’ll stick to a few examples to keep it simple. Smoking can dehydrate the skin and weaken elastin fibers. It can also break down elastin fibers, causing sagging and enhancing the appearance of cellulite.

Lack of sleep can actually reduce the body’s ability to eliminate toxins. The end result leaves the body holding on to fat, slowing down metabolism, storing more toxins that cause the fat cells to expand and bulge out of the elastin bands/fibers.

~Eating Habits

Yes, it really does have an impact on the appearance of cellulite. Not just for the obvious reasons. Let’s say you’re a fairly thin person, but you still have a lot of cellulite…If you continually munch on salty snacks and sodas, as well as foods that are laden with toxins (processed foods, etc.) then you will be storing those toxins in what little fat you may have. Eat food that’s fresh, stick with the OUTSIDE area of the grocery store when shopping. Buy organic whenever possible.

~Exercise Habits

You have heard this one a thousand times. Sweat it out! But, without proper water intake, you may be doing more harm to your body than good. And you won’t be reducing the appearance of your cellulite as much as you hoped.

~Detoxing Habits

This is another one with so many options. You can spend time in the Sauna (Please refer to my blog post on dead sea salt and sauna detox, of which I will be posting shortly), Detoxifying enema (gets things flowing…YES I said it!), regular exercise, drinking LOTS of water, eating a healthy diet rich in FRESH food not processed, getting regular massage and SKIN BRUSHING  to encourage lymphatic drainage,  vacuum suction cups (can be purchased online, or you may find a technician at a spa nearby). There are many more. Research the one you like the most.

Image Detail

~Water intake

You have heard this one before also. You have got to keep your circulation moving. How is the body suppose to move out toxins if you aren’t drinking water? They say 6-8 glasses of water a day should do the trick. Increase on the days that you exercise or sweat a lot.

~Caffeine Intake

Caffeine can be dehydrating. You need to keep toxins moving OUT. If you drink coffee and don’t want to give up that morning cup (or two) , then drink more water throughout the day. For best results, avoid this all together. Or try a new, healthier habit of drinking herbal teas. The caffeine in most teas doesn’t have the same effect as coffee.

~Salt Intake

This really is a BIG factor. Fat cells are surrounded by WATER. The body holds on to water when it has too much salt. Ditch the salt shaker and watch your salt intake. Get low salt potato chips etc.,

If you still want to go spend $1200-$2500 on many of the cellulite treatment options available, please keep in mind a few things I have observed.

~ Results are Temporary

I watched this and experienced it myself. I worked with the “Velashape” machine on clients at a medspa. I also received treatments on my upper arms. If you do not change your eating habits and exercise regularly, the results will be short-lived. Eating a cheeseburger and fries  during/after your cellulite treatment (YES, this really happened! A lady laid on her tummy while getting a treatment  and ate a burger and fries!) is counterproductive.

~Expense

Treatments can cost upwards in the thousands. You never need just “one” treatment. You always require several within a few weeks apart for best results.

~Longevity

Modern technology only offers temporary results without a change of habits. You can use these expensive treatments to boost or enhance your effect with lifestyle changes. But remember, long-term, you must change your habits.

One last word on Spa/Medical treatments for cellulite is this….Yes, Velashape (and several others) do work for most people. But keep in mind, you will have to go back on a regular basis incurring more cost over time in order to maintain results.

What Is a High Frequency Device?

What is a “High Frequency” device? You will feel so empowered and enlightened when I reveal this one to you. This is such a simple easy and inexpensive way for you to control acne, stimulate collagen, oxygenate your skin, assist in lymphatic drainage, sagging skin, puffy eyes, cellulite and even  stimulating hair growth. Circulation is enhanced, collagen and elastin production increased.

High Frequency was actually developed in the late 1800’s by one of my favorite renowned scientists, Nikola Tesla. It was originally intended for medical purposes such as treating strep throat and other infections.

A picture depicting a young Nikola Tesla.

French biophysicist D’Arsonval also did work in the same area of electrotherapy. In 1892 he then introduced the high frequency current as a means of treating skin diseases, etc..

While in beauty college we were taught about the many uses of a “high frequency device”. It was connected to our bulky steamer as one large unit. It seemed to be a pricey option for me at the time. So  when my friend “Olga” from Russia showed up at school with her hand-held version, curiosity brewed inside. I asked her where she got it and she said she bought it in Russia! I asked her how much it cost her and I believe the price was under $40.00 American dollars. I began my research and discovered one on E-Bay for around $29.00 plus shipping. Not bad.

There are several glass attachments in various sizes and shapes. One looks like a spoon, the other a hair comb. Aside from the obvious uses of the “Hair Comb”, you can pretty much use whatever size attachment is more convenient for whatever part of the body you choose to treat. I like to use the smaller “spoon like” attachment for my temples and around my nose, the larger one for cheeks and forehead. It’s a pretty simple and easy application once you read the instructions that come with the unit.

When applied to the skin a mild electrical current passes through  a neon or argon gas filled electrode causing a subtle glow. All high frequency electrodes produce a neon orange or violet colored glow. It all depends upon the gas they are filled with. Both colors provide equally effective results.

I like to apply masques and serums and gently move the glass attachments (electrodes) around my face to help to “drive” them deeper into my skin, enhancing my treatment and getting better use of my product. The hair comb attachment feels really good as you gently slide it across the scalp you can feel a neat “tickling” sensation that sort of feels like a scalp massage. But this actually helps to stimulate circulation to the scalp and encourage hair growth. Bacteria is killed upon contact with the electrical current being sent out onto the skin surface, circulation to the area is enhanced, pores size is  reduced. Skin continues to get healthier and plumper with each use. You can turn the knob on the handheld unit to increase the intensity of the current. It’s better to start at a low setting and build up over time until you are used to the “rubber band smacking” sensation.

I love the oxygenation of high frequency as the presence of oxygen is necessary for collagen production as well as antioxidants like Vitamin C. It is a safe and non invasive technology that makes it win big brownie points for me!

Make sure you do not use your device by a water source, while wearing jewelry or in a way contrary to instructions. It is really intended for professional use. But reading up on and following instructions insures you much success and safe use of your unit.

Please feel free to message me with any questions. I would love to hear any comments you may have. 😉
