Cucumber-Ginger-Seaweed Masque Recipe

Masque In Ramekin

Here is a fun masque recipe loaded with nutrients to invigorate and nourish dull lifeless skin…

I just made this masque this morning for a friend. The aromas of fresh cucumber and ginger will make you swoon! Her skin had a soft dewy glow afterwards. And I cannot wait to try out  the leftovers tonight on myself ❤  Meanwhile, mine is chillin in the fridge!

Add the ingredients below to your blender and blend on high until smooth~

1. Tablespoon Fresh Lemon Juice

2. 2 Tablespoons Plain Yogurt

3. 1-2 Ounces Irish Seaweed (Soaked for 8 hours, then rinse and add to Masque)

4. 1 1/2 Tablespoons Coconut Milk

5. 1/4 of a Medium Cucumber (peeled)

6. 1/4 Cup Fresh Young Thai Coconut Meat

1. Small piece (1/2 inch) of Fresh Peeled Ginger Root

Blend Ingredients in your blender for 2-3 minutes.  Masque will be consistency of pudding. Add more seaweed if necessary to thicken. The Seaweed will thicken masque nicely. Chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes or longer prior to use.

MASQUE IN BLENDER

You can lather this masque on all over your body. Rub it into the skin in circular motions. Allow it to set for at least 10 minutes before removing with a warm wash cloth, or in the shower.

About The Ingredients~

LEMON~ Has Vitamin C  For antioxidant benefits. Citric Acid acts as a mild skin peel and skin lightener. A wonderful natural exfoliant.

YOGURT~ Moisturizes the skin, fights acne bacteria, prevents premature aging, soothes sunburned and/or inflamed skin. Helps prevent discoloration of the skin.

IRISH MOSS SEAWEED~  Can be purchased at your local health food store, or on Amazon.com. Helps move toxins out of the skin. Reduces redness and irritation. Nourishes the skin with essential nutrients and minerals missing in most modern diets.

CUCUMBER~ Has a natural cooling effect on the skin. Anti-inflammatory, hydrating, soothing. It can help protect your skin from sun damage. That’s because it’s packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and caffeic acid. As an added bonus, the vitamin C also increases collagen and elastin production, resulting in younger-looking skin.

YOUNG THAI COCONUT MEAT~ Has minerals, it’s hydrating and moisturizing to the skin. Anti-viral and anti-bacterial.

GINGER~  Ginger is important to skin health because the elasticity and firmness of skin is what starts to deteriorate with aging. So ginger will help to preserve the skin’s youthful strength and elasticity and slow down the signs of aging. It is ant-bacterial, anti-viral, and it reduces inflammation. A great acne fighter when rubbed directly on to skin.

COCONUT MILK~ The high fat content in coconut milk makes it the perfect skin cleanser. Fats bind to other fats and especially dirt on the skin. Coconut milk binds the impurities and lifts them off of your skin. Skin feels clean and fresh without drying out. Coconut is full of anti-oxidants and also has an anti-bacterial nature to it.  Hydrates skin without over moisturizing.

Homemade Seaweed Masque

SEAWEED

You can create your own seaweed masque simple and easy at home. Seaweed has so many wonderful properties in it for skin health and overall appearance. It is loaded with minerals and anti inflammatory properties.

This masque also has many other ingredients that make it a wonderful alternative to expensive store bought masques.

The ingredients are all active, fresh and natural without any preservatives.

This masque works for any skin type!

Here are the ingredients:

1. 1 cup of Irish Moss Seaweed soaked for 8 hours or more. (Fully immerse in a jar of water, store in fridge over night until plumped)

2. 1/2 of a Fresh Ripe Organic Avocado

3. 1/4 Cup of Organic Whole Plain Yogurt

4. 1 Tablespoon of Organic Raw Honey

5. 1/2 Cup of Coconut Milk

6. 1 Tablespoon of Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. This may take several minutes depending on your blender. Chill Masque in fridge for 2 hours. Apply over cleansed, exfoliated skin. You may use this recipe all over your body and store it in the fridge for up to a week.

You also might want to add more coconut milk for consistency after being stored for a few days.

Leave masque on for 10-15 minutes, then gently remove with a warm wash cloth.

Make sure to moisturize and add sunscreen after use to avoid sun damage. This recipe includes lemon juice which is a natural exfoliant.

IRISH MOSS~

Can be purchased at your local health food store or online at Amazon and other places. This is an excellent anti-inflammatory.

It also helps to move toxins out of the skin and body (when taken internally). Reduces redness and irritation.

Nourishes the skin with essential minerals missing in most modern diets.

AVOCADOS~

Avocados are rich with vitamin A which helps to remove dead skin cells from your body. They also contain an amino acid known as glutamine, which cleans and protects your skin from environmental damage. The antioxidants in avocados help to get rid of toxins that promote premature aging and wrinkling of the skin.

RAW HONEY~

Acne and enlarged pores
Rosacea
Eczema
Hyperpigmentation
Sensitive, mature, and dull lifeless skin

* Raw honey also contains gluconic acid, a mild alpha hydroxy acid that brightens the complexion, evens out skin tone, and lightens scars and age spots.

COCONUT MILK~

The great thing about Coconut milk is that it’s extremely high in fat, which makes it the perfect cleanser to use on the skin. Most of the dirt on our skin consists of various oils and other fat-soluble materials. This is the reason that you can’t shower with water alone and expect to truly get clean; oils only really want bind to other oils.

Since Coconut milk is high in fat, it will easily pick up all these fat-soluble particles, leaving your skin clean and fresh, but not completely dried out afterwards.

Coconut is full of antioxidants, and is also thought to be possibly antibacterial in nature. Those with acne especially can benefit from these possible antibacterial properties.

LEMON JUICE~

Lemon juice may aid in diminishing the appearance of scars and age spots. It may also reduce the appearance of scars left behind from acne lesions. The citric acid contained in lemon juice works as a mild skin peel by removing the outermost layer of your skin and reducing shine.

ORGANIC PLAIN YOGURT~

When applied topically, yogurt will moisturize, fight acne, prevent premature aging, soothe sunburn and help prevent discoloration of the skin.

How To Look Younger Without Spending A Fortune

Ways-To-Save-Money[1]

I want to tell you how you can make some simple, inexpensive, and easy changes to your lifestyle that will make a BIG difference in your appearance with very little damage to your pocket-book. I am a HUGE believer in lifestyle over genetics as a much more compelling influence in the quest to looking younger.

Here is a list of things that I incorporate in to my life, along with some emergency damage control tips when you screw up (like me!) and you need a quick pick me up:

1. On a daily basis, drink LOTS of water (8-10 glasses or more!).

This is often overlooked as important because people do not realise that water circulates in the body and shows up on your face in the form of plumper, smoother skin!

2. Avoid caffeine and alcohol!!!!

It dehydrates and shrivels up your skin!! You can lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in a BIG way by just practicing these first 2 tips! Just take a before and after picture and see for yourself! (wait 3 days)

3. Exercise regularly (brisk walking, Zumba, anything that makes you SWEAT!).

If you can’t or won’t exercise, I have an alternative for you. It’s called SAUNA… Make yourself sweat. This will help release toxins out of your skin and promote circulation to the face.

4. Light Therapy!

Nope, I don’t expect you to go spend $75.00 and up at a Spa for this. I saw a Groupon offering infrared light therapy for 1/2 off at $75.00. You can do this repeatedly at home for a one time fee of around $35.00.

There are numerous benefits to be had with my much more affordable alternative.

Check out my blog post on Sauna Therapy.

You can purchase an infrared bulb and clamp base at your local hardware store. Sit under it at a safe distance (Don’t burn yourself!) for about 20 minutes a day or a few times a week! Read my blog post for more details on the benefits.

5. Buy a “Hydrating” gel masque

For quick emergency plumping when you haven’t followed the first two tips faithfully. A more natural alternative would be one of my oatmeal masque recipes I have posted on this blog. Check them out!

6. Practice “Icing” your skin.

Joan Crawford and Michael Landon did this every day. First thing in the morning after cleansing your skin, hold ice to your cheeks, forehead, and all over for as long as you can stand it. What does this do?

Cold molecules actually spin in the direction of your cells and drive water into your skin. Hot water molecules spin in the opposite direction and pull water and moisture out!

The ice also shrinks capillaries resulting in less redness and inflammation on the face as well as smaller pores!

(THANKS to Olga Burova my very brilliant Russian friend for teaching me about hot and cold molecules!).

7. Use a Collagen Masque.

You can purchase one at any drug store or beauty supply very inexpensively from anywhere from $1.99 and up. Make sure to exfoliate before laying fabric on the skin.

8. Exfoliate gently 1-2 times a week.

You don’t have to purchase an expensive exfoliant.

Simply mix together some sugar and honey and rub in circular motions all over the face after cleansing (while skin is damp). You can also use a little baking soda mixed in with your facial cleanser for a beautiful glow.

This removes dead skin from the face, helps other products to penetrate deeper into the skin and encorages new skin cell growth. This is perhaps the most underestimated skin care habit out there for a more youthful appearance.

9. Get To Bed Before 10:00pm!

Studies show the hours between 10:00pm and 2:00am are crucial to the bodies own natural repairing and healing process. People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to overeat and have more health problems.

Now for some tips that take a little more effort but not a lot:

1. DR. PERRICONE 3-DAY FACE LIFT~ Check out his website for details.

http://blog.perriconemd.com/perricone-3-day-diet-get-a-face-lift-in-your-kitchen/

2. GREEN TEA BAGS~

Carry them with you on vacations or keep a good stash in your kitchen. Steep a couple of them for a few minutes and then throw them in the fridge or freezer. After about 10 minutes, lay back and apply them to your eyes. Leave them 10-15 minutes.

Afterwards your eyes should look much brighter and happier. I am so glad I thought to stash them in my bag on a recent trip to Dallas. I threw out all of my normal practices and ate loads of pizza and junk food. After a night of wine tasting I woke up to a very inflamed face and swollen eye lids.

I am not a party animal at all, it was just some innocent wine tasting! Something I could have done in my 20′s with very little consequences in my appearance. I broke out my green tea bags to the rescue!

3. FACE MASSAGE~

I think Tonya Zavasta has one of the best self protocols out there! Do this several times a week to relax and strengthen facial muscles.

These are just a few tips. There are so many other natural things that you can do. But this is a great start and promises some astounding results. Pick one or two and try them out. Take some before and after photos of yourself!

Hope to share some more Spa Secrets very soon!

Home Grown Beautiful Skin

Did you know that you can make a very effective facial masque at home with a few common items from your refrigerator and/or cupboard? Actually in many ways this is better than what you may purchase in a store or Spa. Some Spa’s actually make similar products on their own to use on their clients. Think about it…if you use something from home it is much fresher and many times with more “active” ingredients than something you may find in a jar with or without preservatives (natural or unnatural).

There are many items that you can use in an at home face masque. I will just be talking about a few of them. So here is a list of the things that I chose to use in this particular masque I made….

1. 1 TBSP Organic unfiltered Coconut Oil

2. 1 TBSP Unfiltered Raw Honey (filtered may be used, however raw is much better do to the enzymes in it)

3. 1 Tsp Cinnamon

4. 2 TBSP Plain Yogurt (full fat is best)

5. 1/4 Cup Oatmeal ( ground in a blender)

You may add milk or more yogurt to desired consistency.

20120125-214229.jpg

First, grind up your oatmeal (1/4 cup or more if desired) in the blender into a powder. Put the oatmeal into a bowl and add your honey (about a Tablespoon or more if desired).

You can add your other ingredients in any order desired, measuring is not really necessary, just think about what you desire more in your masque…Example, Add more Honey if you want hydration and exfoliation from enzymes, more yogurt for acne and irritated inflamed skin etc.

The Finished Product

Some additional add on’s….Raw milk or milk powder, Sea Salt (may be added for exfoliating with in the shower), Brown Sugar, Almond Oil, Sesame Oil.

The Ancient Secrets Of Dead Sea Salt

Hello my fellow bloggers and Skin fanatics! It’s been a while since my last post. But it’s good to be back;) I wanted to talk about a simple way to detox your skin from head to toe. I have found this amazing Company that sells Dead Sea Products at much more affordable prices than the norm. More importantly than price of course, is product effectiveness. That’s the beauty of it! I have been taking Dead Sea Salt baths for quite some time now.

The benefits of Dead Sea Salt Minerals are so vast, I will have to shorten my posting about it or it may never end. So let’s talk about the benefits to your Skin. Dead Sea Salt is loaded with essential minerals that most of us do not take internally on a daily basis.

Here are a few essential ones…Sulphur (Great for acne, Eczema, synthesizing Collagen), Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium (one of the most underestimated and undervalued minerals, allows Calcium absorption to the appropriate places and moves Calcium away from places it does not belong), Bromine (helps with the natural repair of the body together with cell metabolism and can be used as a natural antibiotic).

><

For thousands of years people from all over the world have been flocking to the Dead Sea and bathing in it to receive it's many treasures.

I like to fill up my tub with hot water and add 2-3 cups of Dead Sea Salt, I will sit in it for at least 30 minutes while I read a book or do a facial in the tub. I set my skin products on the edge of the tub along with a mirror and I do my cleanse, exfoliation and masque all while taking my detoxifying bath. The skin gets a bit red from the stimulation and circulation and actually absorbs products better as the pores are open during the bath. And I love rinsing with the Dead Sea Salt bath water.

My skin feels soft and I don’t even need to moisturize afterwards, as the minerals from the bath water already balance moisture levels in the skin. Just pat dry and enjoy the benefits! Light some candles and try it for yourself!

You can find a vast array of Dead Sea Salt products from The Dead Sea Warehouse.

What Is a High Frequency Device?

What is a “High Frequency” device? You will feel so empowered and enlightened when I reveal this one to you. This is such a simple easy and inexpensive way for you to control acne, stimulate collagen, oxygenate your skin, assist in lymphatic drainage, sagging skin, puffy eyes, cellulite and even  stimulating hair growth. Circulation is enhanced, collagen and elastin production increased.

High Frequency was actually developed in the late 1800’s by one of my favorite renowned scientists, Nikola Tesla. It was originally intended for medical purposes such as treating strep throat and other infections.

A picture depicting a young Nikola Tesla.

French biophysicist D’Arsonval also did work in the same area of electrotherapy. In 1892 he then introduced the high frequency current as a means of treating skin diseases, etc..

While in beauty college we were taught about the many uses of a “high frequency device”. It was connected to our bulky steamer as one large unit. It seemed to be a pricey option for me at the time. So  when my friend “Olga” from Russia showed up at school with her hand-held version, curiosity brewed inside. I asked her where she got it and she said she bought it in Russia! I asked her how much it cost her and I believe the price was under $40.00 American dollars. I began my research and discovered one on E-Bay for around $29.00 plus shipping. Not bad.

There are several glass attachments in various sizes and shapes. One looks like a spoon, the other a hair comb. Aside from the obvious uses of the “Hair Comb”, you can pretty much use whatever size attachment is more convenient for whatever part of the body you choose to treat. I like to use the smaller “spoon like” attachment for my temples and around my nose, the larger one for cheeks and forehead. It’s a pretty simple and easy application once you read the instructions that come with the unit.

When applied to the skin a mild electrical current passes through  a neon or argon gas filled electrode causing a subtle glow. All high frequency electrodes produce a neon orange or violet colored glow. It all depends upon the gas they are filled with. Both colors provide equally effective results.

I like to apply masques and serums and gently move the glass attachments (electrodes) around my face to help to “drive” them deeper into my skin, enhancing my treatment and getting better use of my product. The hair comb attachment feels really good as you gently slide it across the scalp you can feel a neat “tickling” sensation that sort of feels like a scalp massage. But this actually helps to stimulate circulation to the scalp and encourage hair growth. Bacteria is killed upon contact with the electrical current being sent out onto the skin surface, circulation to the area is enhanced, pores size is  reduced. Skin continues to get healthier and plumper with each use. You can turn the knob on the handheld unit to increase the intensity of the current. It’s better to start at a low setting and build up over time until you are used to the “rubber band smacking” sensation.

I love the oxygenation of high frequency as the presence of oxygen is necessary for collagen production as well as antioxidants like Vitamin C. It is a safe and non invasive technology that makes it win big brownie points for me!

Make sure you do not use your device by a water source, while wearing jewelry or in a way contrary to instructions. It is really intended for professional use. But reading up on and following instructions insures you much success and safe use of your unit.

Please feel free to message me with any questions. I would love to hear any comments you may have. 😉

Micro Needling for Skin

I couldn’t wait to use mine, and noticed results, yes, immediately! My skin felt tighter, my pores looked smaller. It takes a full 14 days for the collagen activity I set off to complete its cycle. So, it will only get better over the next 2 weeks.

I was so excited to come home on Tuesday from a busy day at the Spa to find my new “Micro Needling Device” I had bought from Amazon. I explored this treatment a few years ago and decided to put it on hold for a bit while I investigated other options for helping my skin to produce collagen (skin plumping protein). You have probably heard about how our skin slows collagen production with age and begins to sink in some places and lose the firm plumpness of our youth.

This is a way I can manipulate my skin at home at a very affordable cost! The device can be called several names such as “Micro Needling”, “Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), “Derma-Roller”. What people don’t realize is how valuable this little $29.00 gadget can be. I am familiar with a Day Spa in a very affluent area that sells this “treatment” along with a professional peel solution application at a hefty price tag of $150.00!!!

This little hand-held device has several micro needles on a roller that put tiny holes in to the skins’ surface. If you have ever explored laser therapy than you are familiar with lasers that put tiny pin holes in the skin. This causes the skin cells to go in to repair mode, fibroblast activity (firing off collagen proteins), plumping and healing the skin, making acne scars fade, reducing wrinkles, stretch marks much less noticeable, refining the pores, etc.

The tiny pinholes left behind after using the roller help to increase absorption of products up to 400%. New skin is regenerated without removing the dermis or damaging the epidermis while improving skin’s elasticity & texture by promoting collagen formation.

Instructions are usually included.

Results are similar to fractional and resurfacing lasers, but without the issues of ablation, heat and necessary downtime. Heat is one of the main causes of hyperpigmentation (uneven dark patches on the skin). I couldn’t wait to use mine, and noticed results, Yes, immmediately! My skin felt tighter, my pores looked smaller. It takes a full 14 days for the collagen activity I set off to complete its cycle. So, it will only get better over the next 2 weeks.

I plan on using my device 3-4 times a week in the evenings. Luckily, as a Professional Aesthetition, I have access to professional grade peel solutions and was able to treat my skin with a solution along with a “Hyaluronic Serum” for hydration and added plumping results. You can get great results with ”Hyaluronic” serums purchased on the internet or at your local health food store. A good antioxidant Vitamin C Serum would make a great addition to your Micro Needle Therapy. Make sure to follow instructions carefully, never apply a professional peel solution without the help or aid of a professional.

I started by cleansing my skin with an organic cleanser, then exfoliating it with some of Eminence’s Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant.

This step is important because you want make sure skin is cleaned thoroughly and any surface dead skin cells removed for proper penetration of the micro needling device as well as the products you apply afterwards.

After using my micro needling device I spritzed my skin with some toner. Because I felt like my skin was sunburned after my treatment (a normal reaction), I decided to apply a ”Calm Skin Masque” with Arnica by Eminence Organics Skincare.

I finished up by applying some Eminence Grapefruit-C Gel and some soothing Stone Crop Moisturizer along with my favorite Wild Plum Eye Cream.

Please feel free to send me any questions you may have about this home therapy device. I look forward to sharing more Spa Secrets with you next week!

Hyperpigmentation: is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin.

Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide. It is a thick, slimy substance. Our bodies produce it naturally in abundance, but it can also be made synthetically. Hyaluronic acid is often used in plastic surgery by injection of a product called Restylane to erase wrinkles and plump up lips.
